Conscription into the armed services in
peactime. Compulsory military service was
introduced in the UK during the World War I
and revived in 1939, but regular conscription
in peacetime was not enforced until 1945.
From 1945 until 1960 all men became liable
for national service at the age of 18,
although exemption was allowed on the grounds
of poor health or conscience. The period of
service was initially 18 months but it was
later increased to two years.
